To protect company social media accounts, give each person their own login with a defined admin role, turn on two-factor authentication for every admin, secure the email address the accounts recover to, remove access the day an employee or agency leaves, and verify any "platform support" message through a channel you already know.

Those five steps close the usual openings: a shared password, a forgotten former admin, or a convincing direct message. The accounts are worth protecting for a reason customers understand better than most companies do: people trust a brand's social presence, and scammers know it.

Why do company social media accounts get targeted?

Because social media is where money moves on trust. In its April 2026 Data Spotlight, the FTC reported that nearly 30% of people who reported losing money to a scam said it started on social media, with reported losses of $2.1 billion. Social media was the costliest fraud contact method of 2025. Facebook had the most reported losses, followed by WhatsApp and Instagram.

Those are consumer reports, and the FTC notes that reports were not collected during the 2025 government shutdown and that most fraud goes unreported. For a business, the figure matters in two ways. A hijacked company account can be used to scam the customers who follow it. And an impersonation account using your name and logo borrows the trust you built, which is why the FTC's guidance for small businesses on impersonators treats warning customers as part of the response.

The mechanics of the lure are the same as any other phishing attempt, covered in how phishing actually works and how to spot it. The difference is the channel: a DM arrives inside an app people use on their phones, between other messages, with fewer of the cues an email client shows.

What do fake "copyright violation" and "verification" DMs look like?

The pattern is consistent. A message arrives claiming to be from the platform's support, safety, or copyright team. It says the page has been reported for a violation, or that it qualifies for a verification badge, and that action is required within a short window or the page will be restricted. It links to a page that looks like a login screen or an appeal form.

Everything in that message is designed to make the person handling the account act alone and fast: an authority they cannot easily call, a deadline, and a threat to something they are responsible for. That is pretexting applied to a social media manager. The account credentials, and often the two-factor code, are what the fake form collects.

The defense is a rule decided in advance: nobody acts on a platform notice that arrives as a DM or an unexpected email. They go to the platform's business settings directly, from a bookmark or by typing the address, and check whether any notice is actually there.

How should admin access be set up?

CISA's guide on social media account protection, written for organizations including private-sector entities, recommends that administrator accounts enforce strong multi-factor authentication. It notes that physical security keys protect against phishing, and that organizations should avoid text and email message-based MFA methods when more robust forms are available.

The same guide advises against sharing credentials, recommends protecting the email accounts linked to social media accounts, and recommends security awareness training for the people who administer them. In practice that turns into a short setup:

Individual logins with roles. Add each person through the platform's business tools under their own account, with the least access their job needs. A shared password cannot be revoked from one person without resetting it for everyone.
Two-factor authentication on for every admin. Platform rules on who must use it vary and change, so do not wait to be required. Turn it on for everyone with access, using a security key or authenticator app where the platform supports one.
A protected recovery email. Whoever controls the inbox that receives password resets controls the account. Use a company address, not a personal one, and give it the same protection.
More than one owner. A second trusted person with full control means a single lost phone or departed employee does not lock the company out.

The same logic applies to logins in general, which is why a password manager is the best security investment most teams can make. For the push-approval tricks attackers use once they have a password, see what MFA fatigue is.

What should happen when an employee or agency leaves?

Access should come off the same day, and someone should be responsible for doing it. Agencies, freelancers, and former social media coordinators are easy admins to forget. Each one is a working login that the company no longer supervises.

Keep a simple register: every platform, every person or agency with access, their role, the recovery email, and who owns the account. Review it when anyone joins or leaves and at least once a year. Who owns the site, host, and login covers the same question for websites, and the answer should be the same: the company owns the account, and people are granted access to it.

When an agency relationship ends, remove its access, check that it did not add other users, and confirm the recovery email and phone number belong to the company. Institutional memory that survives turnover explains why this belongs in a written process rather than one person's head.

What should you do if a company account is impersonated or taken over?

Use the platform's official reporting and recovery tools, reached from its own help center rather than from any link in a message. Then tell your customers. The FTC's business guidance suggests warning customers by mail, email, or social media, and leaving hyperlinks out of warning emails so the warning cannot be imitated.

The same guidance points businesses to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and IC3.gov for reporting, and to reportphishing@apwg.org for forwarding phishing messages. Record what happened and which settings changed, so the next review can close the gap that allowed it.

Not sure? Check before you act

Stop before clicking. Go to the platform's business settings yourself and see whether the notice is really there. If you still cannot tell, screenshot the message (cropping out customer and personal data) and ask your company's approved AI assistant whether it matches a known scam, treating the answer as a second opinion. Then report it the way your company asks. How to check if a message is a scam has the full method.

At Kief Studio we build the verification into the systems themselves, so an access change or a login approval cannot go through on one person's say-so. We also run remote team sessions on exactly this: the messages your staff and your social media managers actually receive and the checks that stop them. In-person sessions in Central Massachusetts are available, scoped in advance. Brian Gagne leads the security engineering; briansgagne.com goes deeper on the technical side.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you protect company social media accounts?

Give each person an individual login with a defined role, turn on two-factor authentication for every admin, protect the recovery email, keep more than one owner, and remove access the day someone leaves.

Should a company share one social media password?

No. CISA's social media account protection guide advises against sharing credentials. Individual logins let you remove one person's access without disrupting everyone else.

Are "copyright violation" DMs from the platform real?

Treat any platform notice that arrives as a DM or unexpected email as unverified. Check the platform's business settings directly from a bookmark or typed address instead of using links in the message.

How much do people lose to social media scams?

The FTC reported $2.1 billion in losses from scams that started on social media in 2025, the highest of any contact method.
