Why the Bing Index Still Matters for Copilot Citations
A Bing index still matters for Copilot citations. OpenAI: ChatGPT search rewrites queries and may cite partners. This domain: 13 cited URLs of 147 posts (Bing AI, 29 Aug 2026). IndexNow with a real key file. One query, one URL.
A Bing index still matters for Copilot citations because Copilot's grounding, on the reports I can see for this domain, is Bing-shaped. ChatGPT search is a different product. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries and sometimes partners with search providers, then may show inline citations. If a page is not in the indexes those systems consult, it cannot be the passage they lift. Stay findable. Answer in the first fifty words. Give each URL its own question.
I am Amelia S. Gagne, CEO of Kief Studio. On 29 Aug 2026, Bing Webmaster AI Performance for ameliasgagne.com showed 13 cited URLs and 448 page-attributed citations in that export. Top three pages took 66 percent. One hundred forty-seven live posts. The bottleneck was query collision, not a missing FAQ widget. How engines pick sources is already a page. This URL owns the index-and-Bing job.
Think of an index as a library catalog. If the card is missing, nobody can fetch the book, no matter how good the chapter is.
Catalog, partner, citation: three different jobs
An index is a list of URLs a search system knows about. Bing Webmaster Tools is how you see whether Bing has your page. Copilot's AI performance reports for this site attribute grounding queries to Bing-labeled activity. I treat that as a reason to stay in Bing. I do not treat it as a reason to claim ChatGPT "uses only Bing." OpenAI's own help text says partners, plural, and query rewriting.
Query rewriting means the model turns "how do I get cited" into shorter hunts like "small business ChatGPT citation 2026." Your H1 and first paragraph should sound like that hunt. How ChatGPT and Perplexity decide sources to cite is the mechanics page. This page is the boring gate: are you in the catalog.
Five gates. Fail the index and the beautiful essay never enters the room.

What IndexNow is, without the protocol fog
IndexNow is a ping. You tell participating engines "this URL changed" and you prove it with a key file on your site. Our key is a real text file on the host. A pretty 202 from a made-up key is a shrug. The engine accepted the HTTP request. It could not validate the key. Ping from a machine that can reach the public API. Production boxes here have no egress, so we ping from the laptop. That is an ops detail. It is also why "we submitted it" is not the same as "they could check the key."
Submit the post URL and the sitemap after you publish. Then wait and inspect the URL in Bing Webmaster. I study behavioral psychology. We like the feeling of having pressed send. Inspection is the part that tells you whether the catalog updated.
The key file has to live at a public URL and match the key you send. A 202 with a 404 key file is a wasted ritual.
One query, one URL, or the winner eats the family
Copilot cites one page per grounding query in the pattern I see. Six essays on "how AI cites" still produced one winner. We split titles and first sentences so siblings could own different hunts. Why more content loses in AEO is that lesson. The week audit is how you check it with ten prompts.
SparkToro's 2024 zero-click study, using Datos, found 58.5 percent of US Google searches ended without a click. Citation is the KPI when the click never happens. Measure how many of your URLs appear, not only sessions. Google's people-first document is still the E-E-A-T public source: a named author, current titles, claims you can open.
What I will not claim
I will not claim an 87 percent "ChatGPT equals Bing" figure from a blog I have not replicated. Search Engine Land's 2026 retrieval work argues OpenAI also uses its own index in some modes. Both things can be true: keep Bing healthy for Copilot, follow OpenAI's published search help for ChatGPT, allow the crawlers those products document. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Bingbot. A subscribe wall is a citation wall.
kief.studio is the parent. LTFI is the department if you want this run as ops. kief.dev is the engineering side. This page is the catalog.
A Friday checklist
Search site:yourdomain.com your-slug on Bing.
If it is missing, ping IndexNow with the real key and re-inspect.
Read your first fifty words out loud. If you cannot hear the question, rewrite.
Confirm no sibling page uses the same first sentence.
Ask Copilot and ChatGPT the question once. Note which URL, if any, they name.
OpenAI says ChatGPT search rewrites queries and sometimes partners with search providers. Copilot's reports on this domain are Bing-labeled. Stay in Bing. Do not flatten that into "ChatGPT is Bing."
What is IndexNow in one sentence?
A signed ping that tells participating engines a URL changed, validated by a key file on your site.
Why did 147 posts only produce 13 cited URLs?
One query, one winner. Siblings that repeat the same hunt donate their citations to the first page that matched.
Do I still need Google SEO?
Yes. SparkToro still shows most US searches on Google, and most of those end without a click. Extractable answers help both surfaces.
How is this different from the "how engines select sources" essay?
That page owns selection mechanics. This page owns the index gate: Bing, IndexNow, sitemap, crawler access.
An AEO audit in a week: ten real questions, who gets cited, one URL per query, extractable first sentences, schema, IndexNow. This domain: 13 cited URLs of 147 posts in Bing AI Performance (29 Aug 2026).
Getting a regulated small business cited by ChatGPT: OpenAI rewrites queries and may cite partners. Put license, town, and a 50-word answer in HTML. This domain: 13 cited URLs of 147 posts (Bing AI, 29 Aug 2026).
AEO for Massachusetts local service businesses: identical NAP, town-true pages, 20 to 40 word FAQs. SparkToro 2024: 58.5 percent of US Google searches ended without a click. Fake city mills are a trust leak.
