An AEO audit in a week: ten real questions, who gets cited, one URL per query, extractable first sentences, schema, IndexNow. This domain: 13 cited URLs of 147 posts in Bing AI Performance (29 Aug 2026).
An AEO audit a small business can run in a week is a citation baseline, not a HubSpot glossary. Pick ten questions a customer would ask ChatGPT or Perplexity. Record which URL, if any, gets named. Then fix extractable first sentences, distinct queries per URL, valid FAQPage, IndexNow, and crawler access. I run this from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, on this domain: 147 posts produced 13 cited URLs in a 29 Aug 2026 Bing AI Performance export.
Copilot cites one URL per grounding query. The audit KPI is how many of your URLs appear, not how many words you shipped.
How to run an AEO audit in a week
Day 1 to 2: questions, not keywords. Write ten prompts a buyer would type. "How do we get cited" is a different query from "what is AEO." Ask ChatGPT (search on), Perplexity, and Google's AI Overview. Screenshot who is named. If your domain is absent, that query is a gap or a collision with a sibling page.
Day 3: one URL, one query. Map each live slug to a distinct question. If two posts fight for the same sentence, engines pick one. That is why this site's citation-mechanics cluster was split. See how to get a small business cited by ChatGPT.
Day 4: first fifty words. The answer plus one number. FAQ first sentences 20 to 40 words. No preamble. Featured snippet shape is the same habit.
Ten questions, ten URLs, ten first paragraphs. Volume without a unique query does not create a new cited page.
Days 5 to 7: machines and honesty
Day 5: schema that matches the page. Article, Person, FAQPage only where the FAQ is visible. Structured data labels. It does not invent citations. Keep job titles current. Do not publish expired roles as present tense.
Day 6: index and bots. Confirm the URL is in the sitemap. Ping IndexNow from a machine that can reach the API. Confirm GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Bingbot are allowed. A subscribe wall is a citation wall.
Day 7: outbound and entity. Three links to .gov, standards, or named research. Named author. Same name on entity SEO as on LinkedIn. For a Massachusetts operator, put the city where it is true (we are in Shrewsbury). Do not fake local pages for towns you do not serve.
This site's IndexNow key is a real file on the host. Submitting with a 404 key returns a polite code and does nothing. Verify the key URL.
What not to do
Do not add more FAQ schema to pages that already lose the query. Do not measure success as total citations on your winner. Measure cited URL count. Bing's export for this domain on 29 Aug 2026: 13 URLs, 448 page-attributed citations, top three at 66 percent. The work is spreading winners, not fattening one.
kief.studio is the parent. LTFI is the hired department if you want this run for you. The method still fits a week of owner time.
A worksheet you can copy
Ten rows. Columns: prompt, engine, cited domain, your slug that should own it, first-sentence draft, schema yes/no, in Bing yes/no. Fill it once. The empty "cited domain" cells are the week. Do not start a new blog category until those ten have owners. Psychology essays wait. Decision questions with numbers go first. That is the same sequence as this site's August 2026 citation map.
A one-week pass: ten real questions, who gets cited, one URL per query, extractable first sentences, valid schema, IndexNow, open crawlers. It is not a glossary of "what is AEO."
Do I need a Massachusetts address for this to work?
Only if you are actually local. State the city you operate from. Fake service-area pages do not help citation.
How do I know the audit worked?
Re-run the ten prompts in 30 days. Count distinct URLs of yours that appear. Also re-export Bing AI Page Stats if you have Webmaster access.
Can one long article pass the audit?
One article can own one query. Ten queries need ten extractable pages or ten sections that engines can retrieve as separate passages. Collision is how you stay at 13 cited URLs.
Getting a regulated small business cited by ChatGPT: OpenAI rewrites queries and may cite partners. Put license, town, and a 50-word answer in HTML. This domain: 13 cited URLs of 147 posts (Bing AI, 29 Aug 2026).
AEO for Massachusetts local service businesses: identical NAP, town-true pages, 20 to 40 word FAQs. SparkToro 2024: 58.5 percent of US Google searches ended without a click. Fake city mills are a trust leak.
How AI assistants decide which businesses to recommend is a naming event. AI Overviews hit 2 billion monthly users in 2025. About 1.2 percent of local businesses get named in ChatGPT. Entity plus a specific page wins.
