I wrote about this briefly in a piece on competitor obsession, but the pattern deserves its own space. Because the AI version of feature creep is more dangerous than the competitor-driven version. When a competitor ships something, at least you can evaluate it against market data. When an AI suggests something, it arrives with confident reasoning, plausible logic, and zero knowledge of your actual customers.

The Suggestion Machine Has No Filter

Large language models are trained to be helpful. When you ask "how can I improve this product," the model treats that as a prompt to generate the broadest, most comprehensive set of improvements it can construct. It draws on patterns from thousands of product descriptions, feature lists, and business strategy discussions. The output looks smart because it is smart — in a vacuum.

But products don't exist in a vacuum. They exist inside a specific market, for a specific buyer, solving a specific problem at a specific price point. The AI doesn't know any of that unless you tell it, and even when you do, it can't weigh those constraints the way someone who's watched three customers churn over a confusing onboarding flow can.

What Happens in Positioning

This is where the damage compounds. When your product does many things, you can't explain it in one sentence. When you can't explain it in one sentence, your customers can't explain it to their colleagues. Word of mouth dies. Organic referrals slow down. Your marketing has to work harder because your product can't sell itself through a simple description.

The everything-product competes with every focused product in every category it touches. And the focused products almost always win those individual matchups, because their messaging is clearer, their onboarding is simpler, and their customers can articulate the value in the time it takes to say a sentence.

I've seen this pattern in companies from five-person startups to teams approaching fifty million in revenue. The moment the product loses its one-sentence description, the sales team starts improvising. Improvisation leads to inconsistent promises, which leads to customers who bought something that doesn't exist, which leads to churn that looks like a product problem but is actually a positioning problem.

AI doesn't cause this. But it accelerates it by making expansion feel strategic rather than reactive. When a founder reads an AI-generated feature analysis that says "adding workflow automation could expand your TAM by 40%," that feels like a data-driven decision. It isn't. It's a plausible-sounding projection based on pattern-matching, not market research. The distinction matters enormously, and it gets lost when the suggestion arrives in the form of a well-structured paragraph with confident language.

The Discipline: Going Back to the Problem Statement

The fix isn't to stop using AI for ideation. It's to build a filter that every suggestion has to pass through before it touches a roadmap. The filter is your original problem statement — the reason the product exists, stated clearly enough that it can disqualify ideas, not just inspire them.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

Define the constraint before you ask for ideas. Instead of "how can I improve this product," prompt with "given that our product solves [specific problem] for [specific buyer] at [specific price point], what improvements would deepen our value for that exact customer?" The constraint changes the output from a feature buffet to a focused set of suggestions that might actually be relevant.

Set goals with timelines before you evaluate. If your Q3 goal is to reduce onboarding time from 14 days to 3, then every suggestion gets evaluated against that goal. "Add a dashboard" — does this reduce onboarding time? No. Set it aside. "Simplify the first-run wizard" — does this reduce onboarding time? Probably. Investigate further. The goal becomes the filter.

Ask the displacement question. Every new feature displaces something — engineering time, design attention, support capacity, marketing bandwidth. Before you build an AI-suggested feature, name what you'll stop doing to make room for it. If you can't name it, or if the thing you'd stop is more valuable, the suggestion fails the filter.

Run it through your ICP, not your imagination. Would your ideal customer pay more for this feature? Would they churn without it? Would they mention it in a referral? If the answer to all three is no, the suggestion is noise, regardless of how smart it sounds. Figuring out where AI fits requires this kind of specificity — it's a strategy question, not a technology question.

The businesses that use AI well for product development are the ones that have a clear strategy before they open the chat window. They know what they're building, who it's for, and what success looks like this quarter. The AI operates within those constraints, and its suggestions are evaluated against them — not adopted because they sound good.

The businesses that get into trouble are the ones that use AI as a substitute for strategic clarity. They don't have a clear ICP, so every audience expansion sounds reasonable. They don't have a defined roadmap, so every feature suggestion feels like progress. They don't have goals with timelines, so every addition seems like it's making the product better rather than making it bigger.

Bigger isn't better. More focused is better. More aligned with the problem you set out to solve is better. More valuable to the specific person who's paying you is better.

Set the goals. Set the timelines. Build the systems that make evaluation rigorous rather than reactive. Then let the AI suggest whatever it wants. You'll know which suggestions matter — and which ones would make your product worse.
