Entity SEO: How to Become the Answer, Not Just a Result
Google doesn't rank pages anymore. It ranks entities — people, companies, concepts. If the Knowledge Graph doesn't know who you are, your content is competing at a disadvantage.

Most people open Search Console to check rankings. It does much more than that — and the most valuable insights are in the data most people ignore.
Most people open Google Search Console to check where their site ranks. That's a perfectly valid use of the tool — and also the least interesting thing it can tell you.
Search Console is the closest thing to a direct channel between your site and Google's understanding of it. It shows you what queries are surfacing your pages, how many times your pages appear in search results versus how many times users choose to click, which pages Google has indexed and which it hasn't, and what structured data issues Google found when crawling. Used well, it's a diagnostic and opportunity identification tool, not just a rank tracker.
The Performance report's query view shows you every query that triggered an impression — meaning Google displayed your site in a result for that query — along with clicks, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. The default 3-month window misses seasonality; set it to 12 months before drawing conclusions.
CTR gaps: Sort by impressions, descending. Look at the queries where you have high impressions but low CTR. A page that appears 10,000 times for a query but gets clicked 0.5% of the time has either a title tag problem (the result doesn't match what the user is looking for) or a position problem (you're appearing at position 12 instead of 1–3, where most clicks happen). These are two different fixes — title tag alignment or content/link investment to move up.
Keyword cannibalization signals: Filter by page and compare which queries are triggering each page. If the same query is triggering two or three different pages, you have a cannibalization problem — Google is uncertain which page to serve for that intent, which often results in both pages ranking worse than one consolidated page would. This is the same pattern a technical SEO audit would surface through a crawl.
Position 4–10 opportunities: Filter for queries where your average position is between 4 and 10. These are pages already ranking on page one but not in the top three, where click distribution drops sharply. A focused content improvement or a link acquisition to a page already at position 6 often moves it to position 2–3, which can double or triple its traffic. These are your highest-ROI optimization targets.
The Index Coverage report (now part of the Pages section in newer Search Console versions) shows which pages Google has indexed, which it hasn't, and why. The three categories that matter most:
Crawled — currently not indexed: Google visited the page but decided not to index it. Common causes: thin content, duplicate content (Google chose a canonical version from another URL), or low-quality signals. This isn't a manual penalty — it's Google's quality filter deciding a page doesn't add enough to its index. The fix is content improvement, not a technical change.
Discovered — currently not indexed: Google found the URL but hasn't crawled it yet. This is a crawl budget issue — Google is deprioritizing this URL relative to others on the site. Common on large sites with many low-quality pages diluting crawl attention from high-quality ones. Fixing this usually means improving the overall signal-to-noise ratio of your site.
Duplicate, submitted URL not selected as canonical: You submitted this URL in your sitemap, but Google chose a different URL as the canonical version. Check whether the URL is self-canonical in its <link rel="canonical"> tag. If it's pointing somewhere else, that's the issue. This feeds into the analytics picture — traffic that should attribute to one page may be splitting across multiple canonicalization variations.
The Core Web Vitals report in Search Console shows real-user performance data (not lab scores) grouped by URL clusters. It flags pages Google considers "Poor" or "Needs Improvement" for LCP, INP (Interaction to Next Paint), and CLS. These matter because CWV are a confirmed ranking signal and because the thresholds are based on real-user field data from Chrome — not your local Lighthouse run.
Pages flagged in this report should be prioritized in any Core Web Vitals remediation effort. The GSC data tells you which URLs have real-user performance problems; Lighthouse tells you what's causing them at the technical level.
The Enhancements section shows which structured data Google found on your site, whether it's valid, and whether it's eligible for Rich Result display in search. If you've implemented FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList, or other schema types, this report shows Google's validation of each. Invalid schema items — missing required properties, incorrect types — appear here as errors and are worth fixing because valid schema is a prerequisite for Rich Result eligibility.
This connects directly to the AI workflow for SEO — schema validation should be part of any publication checklist, not an afterthought discovered when something doesn't appear in search features.
Weekly for active sites with ongoing content programs; monthly for stable sites where content is infrequent. The daily data is noisy — weekly or monthly aggregates are more actionable. Set up email alerts for coverage drops or manual actions so you're notified of critical issues without needing to check daily.
CTR varies heavily by position. Position 1 averages 25–30% CTR; position 2 averages 10–15%; positions 3–10 fall progressively below 10%. These are rough industry averages — they vary by query type (informational vs. navigational vs. commercial), whether SERP features appear, and whether the query is branded. Use your own historical data as a benchmark, not industry averages.
Yes. The query report shows you what people are searching for when they find your site — including queries you may not have written content for specifically. Queries with impressions but near-zero clicks on pages that aren't well-matched to that intent are opportunities to write a more targeted piece. This is one of the most reliable methods for finding content gaps in your existing topical coverage.
As of 2025, Google has added some AI Overview-specific data to Search Console, showing impressions that occur specifically within AI Overview surfaces. Coverage and granularity continue to expand. For now, the best proxy for AI Overview performance is the intersection of featured snippet wins and AI-crawler indexation in your server logs — but native Search Console AI Overview data is improving.
